Hearken Flow HUM series electric actuators are used across different industrial liquid, gas, and automated equipment systems:
We provide on-site button control, menu parameter configurations, and error code diagnostics for the HUM intelligent control board.
When powered on, the HUM control board displays KLKJ during initialization before entering normal operation. If an anomaly occurs, the LED screen displays one of the following fault codes:
F-oF — Valve Position Feedback Disconnection
Probable Cause: Internal position feedback potentiometer wire is disconnected, loose, or damaged.
Action: Inspect internal potentiometer wiring connections to the control board and verify signal continuity.
L-oF — Analog Control Input Signal Loss
Probable Cause: Incoming 4–20mA analog control signal is missing, interrupted, or out of normal current range.
Action: Inspect control signal input loop wiring, verify PLC/DCS output status, and measure signal current at the input terminals.
Lock — Motor Stall / Rotor Lock
Probable Cause: Motor is stalled due to valve seat obstruction, excessive differential pressure, or mechanical stem binding.
Action: Disconnect main power immediately. Check valve seat for foreign debris, test stem movement using manual override, and verify line pressure.
L-UP — Forward Over-Torque (Opening Stroke)
Probable Cause: Actuator encountered excessive mechanical resistance or over-torque condition during the opening stroke in switch control mode.
Action: Check valve opening stroke for mechanical binding and inspect opening travel limit switch settings.
L-do — Reverse Over-Torque (Closing Stroke)
Probable Cause: Actuator encountered excessive mechanical resistance or hard seat binding during the closing stroke in switch control mode.
Action: Clean valve seat sealing faces, inspect closing travel limit switch settings, and recalibrate zero-point position.
UP Key:
Manual Mode: Controls actuator forward rotation.
Auto Mode: Toggles LED digital display (control signal vs. valve position signal).
Parameter Mode: Navigates menu items upward. Combined with A/M, cancels parameter edits and moves up one menu level.
DO Key:

Hearken Flow HUM series electric quarter-turn actuator sizing depends on five parameters:
The output torque of the Hearken HUM Series electric quarter-turn actuator needs to be higher than the valve's peak breakaway torque under maximum working pressure. Standard selection applies a safety factor based on required torque:
Torque Safety Factor Reference
| Valve Operating Torque | Recommended Safety Factor | Required Actuator Output Formula |
| Up to 98 Nm | 1.5 (+50% margin) | Valve Torque × 1.5 |
| Over 98 Nm | 1.3 (+30% margin) | Valve Torque × 1.3 |
*Note: Recommended safety factors apply to standard ball valves handling clean liquids or gases at ambient temperatures. Applications involving slurry, high-viscosity fluids, or high-temperature steam typically require an expanded safety factor of 1.8 to 2.0 due to increased friction over time.
Sizing Calculation Examples
Example A (Small/Medium Valve): Valve breakaway torque is 60 Nm (under 98 Nm).
Calculation: 60 Nm × 1.5 = 90 Nm
Selection: Choose a Hearken Flow HUM model electric actuator rated at 90 Nm or higher.
Example B (Large Valve): Valve breakaway torque is 200 Nm (over 98 Nm).
Calculation: 200 Nm × 1.3 = 260 Nm
Selection: Choose a Hearken Flow HUM model electric actuator rated at 260 Nm or higher.
Hearken Flow HUM series quarter-turn electric actuators integrate with standard industrial electrical systems across common AC and DC voltage configurations:
AC Voltage: 220V AC / 110V AC (50/60 Hz)
DC Voltage: 24V DC
Control specifications depend on whether your system requires basic two-position isolation or continuous flow modulation:
ON/OFF Type: Two-position isolation (fully open / fully closed) via internal limit switches.
Modulating Type: Continuous proportional position control via standard 4-20mA or 0-10V DC input/output signals.
Fast-Acting Type (Quick Open/Close): High-speed operation for 10 Nm to 50 Nm models, featuring a 100% continuous duty cycle for frequent, rapid valve switching without overheating.
Supercapacitor Failsafe (Power Backup): Built-in supercapacitor energy storage automatically drives the actuator to a preset fail-safe position (Fail-Close or Fail-Open) upon main power failure—providing maintenance-free emergency shutdown without battery degradation.
Modbus RS485 Communication: Integrated RS485 interface supporting Modbus-RTU protocol for multi-drop industrial network integration.
Direct mounting compatibility depends on top flange and drive stem dimensions:
Flange Standard: ISO 5211 standard (e.g., F03 / F05 / F07 / F10)
Drive Stem: Double D, Square, or Keyway stem connection options
Enclosure ratings and internal accessories depend on site conditions:
Protection Rating: Standard IP67 weather-proof
Available Options: Internal space heater (anti-condensation)

Q1: Do Hearken Flow HUM series electric actuators support fail-safe (power backup) operation?
A: Yes. Emergency fail-safe automatic return is available utilizing an integrated supercapacitor energy storage module, which automatically drives the valve to a preset safety position (Fail-Close or Fail-Open) upon power outage.
Q2: Can HUM electric actuators operate at a 100% continuous duty cycle?
A: Yes. Customized HUM models can be engineered for 100% continuous duty cycle operation, running continuously without overheating or thermal overload.
Q3: How do I operate the HUM electric actuator manually during a power failure?
A: All HUM actuators are designed with an integrated manual override clutch mechanism. Manual positioning is operated via the square drive shaft at the bottom of the housing using standard external wrenches or socket tools.
Q4: What is the difference between HUM-1 and HUM-1S models?
A: HUM-1 provides an output torque of 35 Nm with a lightweight, high-strength Nylon enclosure. HUM-1S provides 50 Nm of torque with a heavy-duty Aluminum alloy enclosure for demanding site conditions.
Q5: Does the optional anti-condensation space heater share the same power terminal with the main actuator?
A: No. The internal space heater requires an independent power supply wired directly to its dedicated terminals.
Q6: How does the anti-condensation space heater operate when the valve is closed?
A: The heater remains continuously energized as long as its independent power circuit is active. This ensures round-the-clock moisture prevention inside the enclosure, regardless of whether the valve is open or closed.
Q7: Are 24V DC and 220V AC voltage options priced differently?
A: No. Standard 24V DC and 220V AC voltage configurations carry the same standard factory pricing.
Q8: Can the bottom drive stem socket be customized (e.g., to 11×11 mm)?
A: Yes. We can supply reduction sleeves/adapters for standard socket sizes, or directly machine custom square/double-D stem sockets in our factory for volume orders.
Q9: Do HUM electric actuators ship with standard Hearken Flow branding or unbranded private labels?
A: We offer flexible OEM branding options, including unbranded (neutral) nameplates or custom private-label branding tailored for distributors and valve manufacturers.
Q10: What certifications does the HUM series hold, and is it explosion-proof?
A: The HUM series is certified to CE, RoHS, ISO 9001, and SIL 3 standards, with an IP67 weatherproof enclosure.
Q11: What is your standard lead time and minimum order quantity (MOQ) for OEM orders?
A: Standard sample orders ship within 3 to 5 business days. For custom private-labeling, specific stem machining, or OEM wiring, we offer flexible low-MOQ options. All HUM actuators are covered by an 18-month factory warranty.
