Problem |
Possible Cause |
How do we solve it? |
|
ICM LCD screen shows "Phase Loss" or "Stall Alarm" |
Missing phase in 380V/440V line, or media debris jamming the valve disc. |
We built automatic 3-phase sequence correction into HUS actuators, though all three phases must be present for operation. When media jams the valve, our motor stall timer trips to protect internal windings. We suggested clearing pipeline debris first—our thermal protection will reset automatically after cooling. |
|
Infrared remote control does not change settings on ICM screen |
Dust/oil build-up on LCD, low remote battery, or active menu lock. |
In heavy industrial environments, dust or oil can easily build up on the LCD display. It will block signals from the infrared remote. We suggest wiping the LCD clean and checking remote batteries. Hearken Flow also built a dedicated key sequence on the remote to unlock the setup menu. |
|
4–20mA position feedback error on RPC modulating card |
Zero and full travel position offset after valve mounting, or reversed polarity. |
When actuators are mounted onto the valve, minor mechanical alignment shifts can occur. We designed our RPC board with a 4-button "One-Key Auto-Calibration" routine to reset 0% and 100% travel points in seconds without extra tools. |
|
HART 7.0 fieldbus not communicating (HART models) |
Loop resistance outside 250 Ω–1100 Ω range or electrical noise on signal lines. |
Our HART module requires loop resistance between 250 Ω and 1100 Ω for digital communication with calibrators. We advise using shielded twisted-pair cables with single-point grounding to avoid electrical noise interference. |
|
Actuator moves to unexpected position when 4–20mA signal drops |
Fail-safe option configured to Open or Close instead of Stay. |
Hearken Flow provides three factory-preset fail-safe actions during control signal loss: Stay in place, Fully Open, or Fully Close. We can pre-set this logic at our factory, or you can update it via the RPC menu and infrared remote. |
|
Handwheel turns, but valve stem does not rotate |
Shaft coupling disengaged, or valve stem key sheared under pipe pressure. |
HUS series quarter-turn electric valve actuators use an ISO 5211 shaft mounting. If the handwheel turns freely without moving the valve, we advise unbolting the top flange to inspect shaft alignment and verify stem key integrity. |
|
Water or moisture found inside terminal box |
Cable glands unsealed or space heater left unpowered in outdoor. |
To avoid moisture ingress in outdoor installations, we advise sealing all cable entry glands. Where our Code X PTC space heater is installed, we advise keeping it continuously powered to avoid internal condensation. |
We advise these basic checks during regular visits:
RPC Board Calibration: Re-run the 4-button auto-calibration on our RPC board after mounting HUS series quarter turn electric valve actuators onto a new valve to sync zero travel limits.
LCD Cleaning: Clean dust and oil off the LCD so the infrared remote control sensor stays clear.
Continuous Space Heater Power: In outdoor or damp installations, keep our Code X space heater powered at all times to stop water condensation inside the body.
ISO 5211 Drive Coupling Inspection: Check the internal shaft output coupling and apply grease during routine valve maintenance to keep stem movement smooth.

Select the correct Hearken Flow HUS actuator for your valve by checking these 5 parameters:
To calculate the required torque for the Hearken HUS actuator, take the valve's peak open/close torque (breakaway torque) at full working pressure, then add a safety factor:
Torque Safety Margin Table:
|
Working Fluid & Service Conditions |
Suggested Safety Margin |
Actuator Sizing Formula |
|
Clean Water, Oil, or Inert Gas |
+30% Margin (1.3x) |
Required Torque = Valve Torque x 1.3 |
|
Slurry, Viscous Liquid, or High-Temp Steam |
+50% to +100% Margin (1.5x to 2.0x) |
Required Torque = Valve Torque x 1.5 (up to 2.0) |
*Note: Standard 1.3 safety factor applies to clean water or gas at room temperature. For dirty, viscous, or high-temperature fluids, use a safety factor of 1.5 to 2.0 to account for additional valve friction over time.

Code Breakdown:
Q1: How do I make sure the HUS actuator matches my valve stem and flange?
A: HUS series quarter turn electric valve actuators follow standard ISO 5211 flange sizes (F03 to F16). The drive output accepts double-square, keyway, or flat stems. For smaller stem sizes, use a standard reducing sleeve.
Q2: Can the HUS electric actuator be customized with a fail-safe (power-off reset) option?
A: Yes. HUS actuators can be equipped with a fail-safe system. When main power fails, the stored energy automatically drives the valve to a safe position (fail-close or fail-open).
Q3: What power storage technology is used in HUS fail-safe actuators?
A: HUS fail-safe models use Lithium-ion Capacitors (LIC) for long service life without regular battery replacements.
Q4: How long does the Lithium-ion Capacitor (LIC) battery last outdoors?
A: LIC batteries operate reliably across wide temperature ranges without rapid performance loss. In outdoor field installations, they have run for 5 to 6+ years without maintenance or replacement.
Q5: Can I operate the HUS actuator manually during a power outage?
A: Yes. Every Hearken Flow HUS series quarter turn electric valve actuator includes a manual override system. Depending on the model size, it comes with a clutch-operated handwheel, push handwheel, clutchless handwheel, or a hex spanner for manual operation during power outages or setup.
Q6: What happens to a modulating HUS actuator (4-20mA) if the control signal is lost?
A: For modulating models (Code M1), you can set the signal-loss action to stay in place, fully open, or fully close.
Q7: Can I order the HUS series as a multi-turn actuator?
A: Yes. Besides quarter-turn models, Hearken supplies custom multi-turn HUS actuators to match linear or multi-turn valve applications.
Q8: What is the difference between IP67 and IP68 housing?
A: Standard HUS actuators are IP67 rated for weatherproof outdoor use. For flooded pits or submerged installations, choose the optional IP68 submersible housing.
Q9: Does the explosion-proof model (Code EX) also protect against rain?
A: Yes. Explosion-proof models include standard IP67 weatherproof protection. IP68 protection is also available upon request.
Q10: Why should I add the internal space heater (Code X)?
A: We advise the space heater (Code X) for outdoor or humid locations to protect internal electrical parts from condensation.
Q11: What certifications do HUS electric actuators have?
A: HUS actuators are CE marked and IP67/IP68 rated. Explosion-proof models are ATEX and IECEx certified (Exd IIC T6) for hazardous areas.
Q12: What is the lead time for HUS actuators?
A: All HUS actuators are made to order. Lead time depends on quantity, housing color, and custom options. Standard orders ship in 2 to 3 weeks, while large batches or custom paint colors take 3 to 4 weeks. Contact us with your specifications for a precise production schedule.
Q13: Is Hearken Flow a direct manufacturer or a trading company?
A: Hearken Flow is a direct electric actuator manufacturer with our own CNC machining, assembly, and testing facility in Wenzhou, China. We supply directly to valve OEMs, distributors, and system integrators worldwide without middleman markups.
